The Five Mindsets That Drive Burnout
Burnout manifests uniquely across individuals, shaped by the intersection of personal circumstances, ingrained behavioral patterns, and underlying mental health factors. Through my exploration of this topic, I've identified five core mindsets that frequently underpin burnout. Understanding which mindsets resonate with your own experience can be a crucial first step toward recognizing the patterns that may be draining you. Below, you'll find each of these mindsets described. As you read through them, I invite you to reflect honestly on which ones show up in your life:
The Perfectionist has high standards for themselves and others. This person works overtime to make sure everything is to a certain standard that they’ve established.
An Individualist takes pride in being the person who says ‘I got this’ or prefers taking on challenges solo. They take on too much responsibility without asking others for help.
The People-Pleaser puts in more work and will become stressed to satisfy others or to make sure that everyone sees them in a good light. They will go above and beyond to help others, even at their own expense.
The Avoider works constantly to not face the problems that they are struggling with.
The Achiever has no limits. They are goal-oriented and find value and satisfaction by achieving goals, no matter what it may cost them.
How to heal your burnout mindset:
Perfectionist: Evaluate the why behind your standards and expectations. Explore if your standards are realistic or sustainable.
Individualist: Ask and seek help in small and direct ways to build your support system.
People-Pleaser: Know that you are enough and that working to appease others does not make you more worthy of love or valuable.
Avoider: Have a healthy outlet to express your thoughts and emotions with a person you feel safe with. Take small steps to face what you are avoiding each day.
Achiever: Identify what you are content with. Don’t be influenced by accomplishing goals or others’ standards for success. Redefine it for yourself that is aligned with your values.
By identifying your burnout mindset, you take an important step to heal, shift, and undo unhelpful patterns. To hear my deep dive into the five mindsets that drive burnout, listen to my latest Moving Beyond Burnout episode below:
